How to Maintain and Seal Your Concrete in the Pacific Northwest

Concrete is one of the lowest-maintenance surfaces you can own, but a little care goes a long way — especially in the wet, mossy Pacific Northwest. Here's how to keep your concrete looking its best for decades.

Keep It Clean

Sweep debris and rinse your concrete periodically. In our damp climate, moss and algae can take hold on shaded, north-facing surfaces — a wash with the right cleaner keeps them at bay and keeps the surface from getting slick.

Seal It — and Reseal It

Sealing is the single best thing you can do for concrete here. It repels water and stains, resists freeze-thaw damage, and keeps decorative color rich. Standard concrete benefits from sealing every few years; stamped and colored surfaces should be resealed on a regular schedule to protect the finish.

Address Stains Promptly

Oil, rust, and organic stains are easier to remove when fresh. A sealed surface gives you time to clean up spills before they set.

Protect Joints and Edges

Keep control joints clear and, on older slabs, consider caulking joints to keep water out. Avoid dropping heavy loads on unsupported edges.

Go Easy on De-Icers
